Grimethorpe Colliery Band secure Robert Childs
The world's most famous brass band appoint Robert Childs as Principal Conductor & Director of Music



Dr Robert Childs has accepted the position of Principal Conductor and Director of Music with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band.

Band Manager Nigel Dixon said, “We are delighted to have secured the services of one of the most successful conductors of his generation. Everyone at Grimethorpe is looking forward to a new and exciting era benefitting from Bob’s wealth of experience and musical leadership.”

Robert is a former principal euphonium of Grimethorpe and recently appeared with the band as their guest conductor at both the National Championships of Great Britain and Brass In Concert Championships. Robert commented, “I’m thrilled to accept this new position with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. They are undoubtedly one of the biggest names in the brass band world and I’m looking forward to working with them on a regular basis.”

Robert will be responsible for all matters musical including programming, personnel and guest conductors. His practical involvement will include contests, recording projects and selective concert work. In addition Robert has also accepted an invitation to become a Trustee of the band.

Peter Haigh, a long-serving Trustee himself who has been involved with the Grimethorpe Band for 37 years commented, “We are delighted Dr. Robert Childs has accepted the added responsibility of serving as a Trustee. I have no doubt his experience and expertise in music performance and education will be of great benefit to the Grimethorpe Colliery Band organisation.”

Robert’s home base will remain in Wales where his highly acclaimed work at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama as Director of Brass Band Studies will continue. His first public appearance with Grimethorpe will be the Yorkshire Regional Championships at St Georges Hall in March.
